I have found how to change the look of the default-almost-ugly GNOME clock applet...
gconf-editor
goto /apps/panel/applets/clock_screen0/prefs
set
format = custom
custom_format = <span style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);font-size:smaller;">%a %d %b</span> <b>%H:%M</b>
